Last Friday night at the corner of West Fourth and West Tenth: There’s a crew of Calvin-clad arrivals to Charles restaurant. Enter Arlenis Sosa, Karolina Kurkova, and the lovely Michelle Monaghan for the Cinema Society’s dinner following the premiere of Monaghan’s new film, Trucker. “I loved the movie. I’m not sure if it was the heightened emotions from just having a baby, or just the amazing acting of Michelle Monaghan, but I sobbed through the whole thing,” said Eleanor Ylvisaker, who stayed for a little bit before going home to her new son. Talk quickly turned to the subject of maternal instinct, as no one could shake the impact of Monaghan’s performance as Diane Ford, a mother suddenly faced with caring for her estranged eleven-year-old son. “The character isn’t likable by most standards. I was intrigued by playing someone the audience might not indentify with,” said Monaghan, herself a mother. “As an actor, first and foremost, you don’t want to judge your character, but rather leave her open to interpretation.” It was a full turnout in honor of Monaghan’s New York debut for the independent film shot in nineteen days. “There’s a lot to celebrate,” she said, before sitting down to dinner. Oh, and there was another star debut of sorts, that of the pale silvery gray dress from Calvin Klein’s spring collection, which Monaghan chose for this special evening.
