For Tricia Trimble, the creation of her new mineral-based sunscreen line was part health initiative, part healing process. Twenty-one years ago, her mother passed away from a melanoma skin cancer she discovered on her left hand, most likely caused by the sun exposure accrued from years of driving. In the years that followed, Trimble left her job as a CPA and embarked on a soul-searching quest to find her life’s calling. In 2009, she found it—throwing herself headlong into the development of Suntegrity, a sun protection line so seamless, so lightweight, so thoroughly unobtrusive, you might actually look forward to using it every day. “I wanted something that smelled good, that wasn’t too thick or white, that felt comfortable on the skin, but was also completely nontoxic and safe,” says Trimble, speaking from her Marina del Rey offices, where the bright California sunshine offers a real-life case study on the importance of using SPF year-round.

Her all-natural, citrus-scented formulas (free of parabens, phthalates, propylene glycol, mineral oils, synthetic dyes sulfates, nanoparticles, and PABA) contain only one active mineral: “Twenty percent zinc oxide, which is currently the only sunscreen ingredient that’s FDA-approved for babies [under six months of age],” she says. The best among them include the Natural Mineral Sunscreen for Body SPF 30, which contains enough fast-absorbing moisturizers (hyaluronic acid, organic jojoba oil) and antioxidants (organic green tea, organic pomegranate seed oil) to double as a lightweight body lotion; and the tinted 5 in 1 Natural Moisturizing Face Sunscreen, Broad Spectrum SPF 30, which practically eradicates the need for foundation. “There’s currently a light and a medium tint and I’m working on a formula for darker skin now,” she says of testing deeper sample shades on friends in the quest for perfection.

On a personal level, Trimble has found catharsis in the production of the line, which she hopes will convince more women to reach for a potentially life-saving dose of sun protection every day. “From the beginning, I wanted it to be a positive catalyst for change,” she says. “For me, the idea of someone rubbing in their sunscreen every morning is a metaphor. It’s my way of spreading the love.”
